Oxfordshire Railways in Old Photographs - A Second Selection

Regular price £5.00 Unit price per

The compilation of a second selection of old photographs illustrating the former railway network of Oxfordshire has enabled Laurence Waters to fill some of the gaps left by the first volume as well as cover some of the lines in greater detail. The result is a delightful companion to the earlier book that will appeal to those who still remember journeying on the Watlington branch, or via Chipping Norton and Bloxham on the service between Kingham and Banbury, as much as the railway enthusiast.

Changing transport needs have caused the network to contract in Oxfordshire, as they have everywhere else, and continue to cast doubt on the future of some local lines. Fortunately for us, the Golden Age of steam railways coincided with the development of photography and images survive which provide a unique record of a vanished era. They conjure up a time before the domination of the motor car, when no one in the county was ever more than ten miles from a station and the trains seemed to run on time.

Laurence Waters, author of several books on the history of Oxfordshire's railways and lecturer on railway topics, has made this fascinating selection from a personal archive of more than 15,000 photographs. His knowledge and enthusiasm bring to life a past that for many is just a memory but for many more will be a journey in itself.
