Urie from 1918 for an express passenger class of 4-6-0s, the 'King Arthur' or 'N15' class eventually totalled around 74 locomotives. The original 20 locomotives built to Urie's design were, however, not successful and when Maunsell was faced by the necessity, soon after the Grouping of 1923, to construct further express locomotives he took the opportunity to modify the original design and alongside the new build locomotives, also modified the original 20. Successful after the modifications, the career of the class on both the Central and Eastern sections of the SR was curtailed by the SR's policy of main line electrification, but the type continued to offer sterling services on the ex-LSWR main lines until the arrival of the Bulleid Pacifics. Peter Swift provides a reference to the class with detailed 4mm scale drawings along with a comprehensive selection of colour and mono photographs that illustrate the considerable variety of liveries carried by the locomotives during their careers and the detail differences that marked out each individual locomotive at particular dates. The locomotives were built at Eastleigh and by North British in Glasgow. As express passenger locomotives, examples of the class operated widely over the Southern Railway and latterly Southern Region. However, the plans to create two new-build steam locomotives in the 'P2' class have put these locomotives at the forefront of enthusiast railway interest. Although the 2-8-2 wheel arrangement was uncommon in Britain, it had been used to great effect abroad and Gresley's interest in locomotive design around the world, encouraged him to first build two Class P1 freight locomotives. Built at Doncaster in 1925, they proved difficult to operate and were withdrawn by Gresley's successor Thompson in 1945. Gresley's next venture into the 2-8-2 wheel formation was a landmark in British express locomotive history. Arguably, No 2001 Cock o' the North was the most powerful steam locomotive to run on Britain's railways when it was built in 1934. Gresley's design was influenced by the French master of steam locomotive engineering, Andre Chapelon, and the initial eye-catching look of 2001, with its cutaway smokebox top was modified in subsequent locomotives to handsome streamlining similar to the 'A4s'. However, the story does not end there because in this century two separate projects are underway to build new 'P2s'. The same organisation that built the Tornado, the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, has started the construction of 2007 Prince of Wales and the Doncaster P2 Locomotive Trust is building a streamlined 1938-style replica 'P2'. This new book introduces Gresley's 2-8-2s then concentrates on the design, construction, testing (in the UK and France) of the P2s, along with their life in traffic, rebuilding and scrapping. The author has access to a complete set of images following the construction of No 2001 Cock o'the North from the 1930s, as well as some original engineering drawings, gradient profiles and copies of some of Gresley's letters about the engine. The book includes an appendix with the major stats and mileages of each engine along with items like the Vitry test diary. Author Andrew Hardy is the Archivist and Researcher of the P2 Steam Locomotive Company and has spent the last few years researching the original P2 locomotives and has amassed a significant amount of information on the locomotives, much of which has not been published before. His archive holds 400 images of P2s, some very rare film, original documents including some of Gresley's letters and personal correspondence along with other period material.

Hardback, 128 pages, black & white and colour photographs

Condition: Very Good

NB This book will only be sent via "tracked" mail/courier - price includes tracked shipping to UK addresses, overseas customers please select tracked option at checkout.

London's Underground is one of the best-known and most distinctive aspects of the city. The GWR works at Swindon was, perhaps, the best example of excellence in railway engineering and production in the UK. Many flocked to see the up-to-date facilities in action. The stories cover their involvement in important developments in engineering and management techniques at a time when the railway reigned supreme as the prime transport medium. The Span of their careers also covers a time of great change in Irish history, as that land struggled for its own identity and political voice. The one notable event linking the two themes of the book, engineering in the South and management in the North, was the birth and brief career of the Titanic. As with all biographies, access to family data helps in the formation of a more complete assessment of the subjects. Such information was unearthed in written and pictorial form and has been used to good effect in building a picture of the three brothers careers. Irish history is a fascinating subject, the interweaving of events over the late 19th to early 20th centuries with the railway developments attributed to the brothers shows how politics can interfere with the smooth running and development of transport services so vital to a land's economy. This, then, tells the story of three exceptional men who played such an important part in the Irish railway scenario.

Softback, 176 pages, black & white photographs

REDUCED - Surplus Stock

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1910/7111/files/9780853616054_f9ecd490-3ba7-4d10-ac8a-5079afa1f360.jpg?v=1712312605
yeovil-150-years-of-railways-9780853616122
Yeovil - 150 Years of Railways (OL128)

This is the story of intense rivalry between the independent railway companies of the Victorian era and their ambitions towards the west of England. Vincent Raven was, arguably, one of the far-sighted - if not the most far-sighted - of the Victorian railway engineers. His work on steam locomotives was overshadowed by Churchward of the Great Western Railway and by Gresley of the Great Northern Railway but in promulgating his ideas on electric traction, in common with Sir Isaac Newton, he stood on the shoulders of giants. Raven was born in Great Fransham in Norfolk in 1859 and in 1875 he took up a pupil apprenticeship with the North Eastern Railway at Gateshead. By 1910 Raven had risen to the position of Chief Mechanical Engineer with the NER. He was to remain in that position until the formation of the LNER at the Grouping. His 0-8-0 locomotives in particular were to prove to be solid workhorses from their introduction right through to withdrawal in the 1960s. Raven's vision of an electrified main line from York to Newcastle was set aside with the onset of World War I, little was he to know that it was to take some 70 years before that particular dream was to become a reality.

Softback, A5 format, 144 pages, with 109 illustrations

Condition: Very Good

Peter Paye's original book dating from 1981 looking at this East Anglian branch line. This final publication covers a number of topics and using papers from the Mr. R. Bond and Mr. G. Dow collections the book asks whether the Standard project was required and what happened to it, how the locomotive works of the UK handled repairs and developments of various locomotive types including comparison of Standards with existing designs. There are sections on the naming policy adopted in regard to specifically Britannias, how the shed and shed code system had developed but in particular with reference to dealing with the Standard classes. A further lengthy section deals with Locomotive Performance and shows various comparisons with other locomotive types. More repair tables have been provided following feedback from earlier volumes and inevitably this book provides a list of amendments and correction to the previous four volumes.
