Rails in the Isle of Wight

Here is a broad picture, amply illustrated, of the railways of the Isle of Wight, how they looked-and were-during the 105 years of steam operation which ended on December 31, 1966.

Mr. MacLeod was in charge of the Island railways during the six years from 1928 to 1934 when momentous changes were made and when they reached new levels of efficiency and occира-tion. Mr. Allen knew the railways as far back as 1914 and he is the author of the first book written on the railways of the Isle of Wight in 1928.

This is not a detailed history of the Island lines nor does it cover much of parliamentary or financial matters. It does, however, give a full account of all the locomotives which have worked in the Island and as much as is known of the rest of the rolling stock. It also contains a great deal of personal material, recollections of people and of what was done, why and how. As the authors say, 'What we have tried to do is to give some personal reminiscence and sense of atmosphere with a good collection of pictures many of which, we are glad to say, have never been published before. If any of our love for the Island and its little railways has come through to our readers, we will feel happy indeed.'
