Railways - An Anthology

Railways have always aroused strong passions delight and fury, fear and admiration, love, hatred and great nostalgia. All are represented in this admirably eclectic selection of writing about the railways of Great Britain and Ireland some 300 pieces ranging from three words to six pages in length and from 1615 to 1989.

The book is not primarily concerned with technical equipment and complicated operations, or with the financing and management of the railways, although all of these find their place. At the heart of the collection are the human beings who have been involved with the railways -those who admired or denounced them, those who built them and made them work, those who travelled on them or observed the way others travelled. Great Victorian writers are represented: Dickens, Ruskin, Trollope and Hardy; so also are railwaymen, politicians, poets and engineers, visiting Frenchmen, Germans and Americans.

Railways have given rise to some splendid writing - much of it gathered here to delight all those who have any feeling for them and for what they have done.
