The Wainwright P Tanks
The class of eight diminutive P tank locomotives, introduced in 1909 by Wainwright as an updated version of the famous Brighton 'Terriers', were soon outdated by increasing traffic loads, so that by 1926 the class had been taken off their remaining passenger turns. They survived, serving as station pilots and shunters and, with the arrival of standard gauge railway preservation in the 1960s, the four surviving members of the class provided an ideal locomotive for the initial period of relatively light loaded services, and at long last found a much appreciated niche in railway history.
This book gives the full history of all the locomotives with comprehensive details of their diverse workings through the years and is profusely illustrated from many sources.
