Those WERE the Days

Regular price £19.50

Self-confessed trainspotter Barrie Woods presents a fascinating trip along Memory Lane, describing his exploits in the last decade of main line steam on British Railways  over the years 1959-1968.

The book describes Barrie's activities, along with his friends, who as a trainspotter in the late 1950s and 1960s travelled extensively during those years to 4th August 1968, when steam finished on BR. He tells of using many forms of transport such as minibuses, coaches, trains, bicycles, motorbikes, cars (even hitchhiking) and ferries! Many amusing incidents occurred through the period which are included in the book, such as a contretemps with a herd of Bullocks, a coach catching fire on the M1, the Castleford ‘Snow’ incident, some strange overnight encounters, hitchhiking a lift on a 9F and of course run-ins with various Shed Foremen! There are many more stories.

During those halcyon years, Barrie visited over 600 locomotive sheds, works and railway scrapyards and in doing so, recorded over 21,000 steam engines. Details of these two aspects are in appendices to the rear of the book.
