British Atlantic Locomotives

Regular price £5.00 Unit price per

The Atlantic wheel arrangement lent itself particularly well to good-looking locomotive design and by and large the British Atlantics were probably the most graceful range of locomotives that ever ran on British rails. Thus they have always been regarded with particular affection by railway enthusiasts. Many of them. moreover, put up Herculean feats of performance in relation to their size, particularly those of the Great Northern Railway. The late Cecil J. Allen saw their evolution at firsthand and travelled many thousands of miles behind them. No one was more qualified to write their definitive history. producing a worthy complement to his best-selling British Pacific Locomotives (also published in the Ian Allan paperback series).

For this new paperback edition his son. G. Freeman Allen. has add-ed a great deal of new detail on the operational use of the locomotives to supplement Cecil J. Allen's comprehensive account of their design and performance in service. The statistical tables have also been elaborated to include more data, such as individual dates of superheating or other modification, and the individual withdrawal dates of locomotives. The full dimensional tables of each class have been retained from the previous edition.

Furthermore, the illustrations have been completely revised and considerably increased in number to provide a much fuller pictorial record of the locomotives at rest and at work. showing all their various modifications and the various areas of operation in which they served during their careers.
