British Goods Wagons: From 1887 to the Present Day

Britain's railways have traditionally earned most of their revenue from the carriage of freight yet this is an unglamorous job and has been largely ignored by railway writers. Here the evolution of the British goods wagon is at last fully described, from the introduction of the first RCH regulations in 1887 until the present day. The development of various types is described and illustrated by numerous photographs and drawings. An insight into the working of freight trains is also given.

Until the last few years British goods wagons have been simple vehicles suitable for use at relatively low speeds only. Modern wagons with sophisticated suspension and braking systems are a complete departure from previous design concepts. By thoroughly recording the traditional British wagon, while taking a brief look at some of the modern designs, this book is, in effect, a history not merely of open wagons, brake vans and so on but also of a mode of railway operation (slow unbraked goods trains) which is fast becoming obsolete. The work is printed on art paper throughout and lavishly illustrated; it will have special appeal to modellers.
