British Railways was born on 1st January 1948. the four main constituent companies being the Great Western. Southern. London, Midland & Scottish and London & North Eastern Railways.

The newly nationalised rail network inherited 20,023 locomotives of 448 different designs. many of great antiquity. Following wartime conditions many were in a very run down state and the total included only 70 diesel and electric locomotives. Each railway had its own locomotive numbering and depot allocation system but a common form was eventually adopted by British Railways after several different methods were tried.

British Railways Locomotives I948 details every locomotive in capital stock acquired at Nationalisation. quoting number, name -and allocation. Also detailed are the new locomotives built during the first year of BR. whilst all re-numberings into the BR system and locomotive withdrawals arc included, bringing this information together in a single volume for the first time
