The Spendour of Steam

For all his serious writing on railways - he was doing technical translations at twenty-one - it is as an artist that Hamilton Ellis most happily approaches his best beloved subject, the steam train. He could draw a recognizable Brighton Atlantic, or a London and South Western T9 from memory, before he could read or write. Now, like many people, he sees his favourites as a dying race, and the response, in his case, has been the making of a monumental book. There are sixteen coloured plates - he would have liked to have a hundred - and all the subjects belong to living memory, nearly all to his own. Twelve belong to the Homelands, ranging from a North Eastern `single-driver' to a 'Duchess' of the L.M.S., but four engaging foreign visitors have come to join the party. There are many drawings in black-and-white, and an elegant commentary that sometimes, not too often, slips into autobiography.

Hardback with dust jacket, 132 pages, 16 full colour plates and many mono-colour illustrations
