Although George Hudson, the Railway King, may have intended great things for the City of York by making it a major railway centre, it is interesting that nearly 150 years later it has become a significant name in railways for other reasons. Despite the rationalisation and modernisation of the British Rail system in the last 25 years, York remains an important centre in BR operations, but the new development is that the City is now the hub of a range of railway preservation activities in the surrounding Ridings of Yorkshire. What better than that York should be the location of the National Railway Museum! In association with the NRM, and separately, the preservation groups around York mean that the City is a natural centre for railway enthusiasts. We hope that This is York will be useful, or will inspire you to visit Yorkshire and its railways.
