Wartime LMS

The story of the LMS in Wartime is one which mirrors all four railway companies during that difficult period, yet up to now it has never been recounted in detail.

Respected book author and journal contributor L G Warburton has taken as his starting point the situation on the LMS -the biggest single railway company to exist prior to nationalisation - in the years leading up to 1939, and followed this through from the changes brought about in the prelude to war, war itself and then after 1945 how the railway attempted to restore its pre-war eminence.

This is a 'no holes barred' account, the good is told as well as the bad. How when enemy action occurred on one part of the system it could still have a knock-on effect hundreds of miles away. Similarly when a journey might take 24 hours or more no public apology could be given - for fear of informing the enemy of their success in causing such disruption.

Books on railways in wartime have a entering fascination, this is the first to record the situation in great detail and certainly with far more information than had been available in the public domain in the years immediately after the return to peace.
