Lineside Camera - Named Express

Regular price £4.00 Unit price per

Very few named trains existed before the Grouping in 1923, and the practice grew only slowly during the years of the "Big Four". BR however adopted the idea with some relish, introducing a surprising number of new titles during its first ten years of existence, but, thereafter, the policy was reversed as a result of changed circumstances. This book offers a brief history and photographic record of over three dozen of the hundred or so named expresses which have run in Britain over the years. Some of the expresses have become classics, others are less well known and a few appear to have lacked that special merit worthy of named status. Although named trains remain today, the photographs depict an age that passed into history two decades and more ago. An age when steam was still supreme, when locomotive headboards and carriage nameboards were essential and when rolling stock liveries offered some variation; even the few diesel locomotives shown are now but a memory.
