Lineside Camera - North Eastern Express Steam

The North Eastern Region created at Nationalisation by the break-up of the LNER was, geographically, a restoration of the former North Eastern Railway which had lost its identity to the LNER a quarter of a century before. Under British Railways, the Region's steam locomotive stock remained almost exclusively of LNER origin with LNER Pacifics from York, Darlington and Gateshead continuing to work the East Coast expresses and, with those from Heaton and Neville Hill, the secondary routes. Boundary changes in the 1950s, saw these locomotives still dominant with the addition of the Pacifics working out of Copley Hill, and, indeed, with their expansion into previous London Midland strongholds around Leeds, where they joined "Jubilees" and the odd standard Pacific. This book offers a glimpse of the Region's express power from the halcyon pre-diesel days through to the final curtain in the mid-1960s.
