The ‘Acquired Wagons’ series sets out to redress the balance and provide that information. Written by David Larkin, one of the acknowledged experts on British railway wagons, each volume is heavily illustrated throughout.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis monumental series, which has presented over 1,400 photos in its eight volumes, draws to a close with a detailed examination of the various steel wagon designs acquired and, in some cases, perpetuated by BR. There were many conversions from the latter types and these are fully covered. These entered service between 1950 and 1954. Their work on the Southern Region was mostly on the South Western mainlines to Exeter or Bournemouth. Both Nos 10202 and 10203 spent a week on the South Eastern section working the ‘Golden Arrow’ and ‘Night Ferry’ services at different times. In the summer of 1955, all three locomotives were transferred to the London Midland Region and remained there until they were withdrawn in December 1962. They worked predominantly on West Coast Main Line on passenger duties that ranged from local services between Euston and Bletchley to the prestigious ‘Royal Scot’.\u003cbr\u003eThis new ‘Southern Way Special’ draws heavily on original archive material from the Southern Railway and BR and covers the background story to their authorisation, design and construction and their entry into service. Individual chapters detail the whole of their service life firstly on the Southern and then on the London Midland, the first book to do so. Proving far more reliable than any of their Type 2 rivals, not only did both classes multiply, but they led to orders for uprated versions of each, with 1,250hp at their disposal. The four classes, 24, 25, 26 and 27 totalled almost six hundred examples, and could be seen almost everywhere on the BR network. By 1983, the Class 24s were long-gone from BR metals, apart from one in departmental service, but the 25s and 27s still had four years left. The Scottish Region’s Class 26s however had another decade in service, in some cases taking their operational careers to an impressive 35 years. Happily, there are several examples of all four classes in preservation, many of which are in working order. This book dives into the Neville Stead collection and showcases a variety of locations where Sulzer Type 2s could be seen, as well as the range of workings to which they were assigned. For more than thirty years, the throaty whistling noise of these versatile locomotives could be heard up and down BR’s main lines from East Anglia to North Wales and London to the Scottish Highlands. The cacophony produced by the 16-cylinder engine was something to behold, as they climbed to Ais Gill, Shap or Drumachdar with a heavy freight train. By the dawn of the 1980s, several of the locomotives had been scrapped and an enthusiastic entourage of ‘bashers’ and photographers was determined to get as much mileage and footage out of the remaining Forties as they could. Happily, there are seven Class 40s surviving in preservation, including the pioneering D200. All but one has been restored to working order, and two have even returned to the main line.
