Though BR steam is now but a memory, apart from the three 2-6-2Ts working on the Vale of Rheidol line in Wales, the early 1970s were the peak years for what we would now regard as first generation classic traction.

Most of the Modernisation Plan classes, even the ones which were not very successful and were withdrawn after relatively short careers, were still in service as were the Western Region diesel hydraulics. The Class 50s, introduced only a few years before, were fulfilling their original role on the non-electrified sections of the West Coast Main Line and the Deltics were dominant on East Coast Main line services. Over 1,000 shunters of the 08, 09 and 010 classes are listed in this volume as are the many other classes of shunters, often small in terms of numbers, which were found across the system. In addition to diesel locomotives, the book covers all the electric locomotives, DMUs and EMUs in service at that time.

Equally fascinating, in some ways is the section on preserved, mostly steam, locomotives. As an example, at that time, before locomotives began to be rescued from Woodham’s scrapyard in Barry, just one each of the Merchant Navy, West Country and Battle of Britain Pacifics had been preserved.

This is an exercise in pure nostalgia for those who had an active interest in the railway network at that time, and for younger readers, they may well be amazed at the sheer variety of motive power which was to be seen on the BR network in 1970.

Hardback, 240 pages, numerous illustrations

Expected late November

Railways, Buses, Coaches, Trams & Trolleybuses

From the 1940s onwards, as well as the famous series of abcs aimed at locospotters, a range of other subjects were tackled under the abc branding. Delving into the archive, which came to Crecy with its acquisition of Ian Allan Publishing in 2016, we have begun to reprint a selection of these other abcs. They are quirky and fascinating and all of them provide large helpings of pure nostalgia, opening a window on a lost world, yet one which will still be in the living memory of many.

This book comprises four volumes from the 1940s and 50s focusing on aspects of transport in London. The titles are; abc London Transport Railways Parts 1 and 11 (1950), abc London Transport Trams and Trolleybuses (1949) and London Transport Buses, Coaches and Trolleybuses 14th Edition (1957). These are exact facsimiles of the original publications including photos and advertisements.

A striking feature of the two railway titles in particular and the road transport titles to a slightly lesser extent, is that as well as the lists of numbers which one would expect, there is a considerable amount of narrative text. Short histories of the origin and development of all the individual lines which together made up London Transport’s railway network are given. There are lists of depots and headcodes and a variety of other interesting features. The 1949 volume on trams and trolleybuses provides accounts of the various independent companies and borough systems which were eventually amalgamated to form the vast London Transport tramways network. Details of the various classes of trams and trolleybuses which were in service at that time and the depots which housed and maintained them are also given. Some of the statistics of the bus fleet are impressive with over four and a half thousand RT double deckers listed, fleet and registration numbers provided for each one of them.

Hardback, 310 pages, numerous illustrations

Expected early November

The end of steam on British Railways saw an increasingly blue fleet of diesel and electric traction take over across the national network. Inevitably, there were successes and extreme failures among BR’s shiny new purchases. Some classes of locomotives and units gave excellent value for taxpayers’ money, enjoying long operational careers. Others proved more problematic, and were a costly mistake. You will find examples of both extremes within these pages. Following the first volume of images from the superb, nostalgic Les MacDowall photographic archive, which focused on the Scottish Region, we now travel south of the border into England and Wales to enjoy his photographs of long-scrapped locomotives and units at long-gone stations, sheds and lineside locations. They were taken at a time when few bothered to point their cameras at diesels and electrics, during a decade often neglected by railway photographers, from the mid-1960s through to the mid-1970s.

Softback, 104 pages, black & white photographs
