Fowler Locomotives: A Pictorial History

Regular price £6.00 Unit price per

1997 Reprint

The locomotive designs of Sir Henry Fowler, ranging from humble shunting engines to the magnificent 'Royal Scot' 4-6-0s and including such interesting types as the solitary 0-10-0 Lickey banking engine and the experimental high-pressure 4-6-0 Fury, formed a major part of the locomotive stock of the LMSR. Their plain but rather attractive appearance was entirely in the traditions of Derby, with all the hallmarks of that great locomotive works: namely simple, robust. construction and ease of repair.

In this pictorial history the varied and interesting careers of Fowler's designs are recaptured by a well-balanced blend of impressive action photography and crisp record shots. Concise and informative captions assist in telling the story, together with a short introductory text dealing with each class.

Many of the photographs are reproduced for the first lime, and feature the work of some of Britain's leading railway photographers: evoking a vivid reminder of a now vanished railway scene.

This book was first published in 1972 and statements made then were current. Many of these may well have been overtaken by subsequent events.
