Many a student of British railway history might be expected to express the opinion that the mixed traffic 4-6-0 was the most useful, versatile and successful of steam locomotive designs, and would probably quote the LMS 'Black Five' and Great Western 'Hall' as prime examples. That the LNER representatives of this wheel arrangement might not be the first to come to mind is partly explained by the tact that their Pacific, 'V2' and 2-6-0 companions have somehow always been considered more typical of the Company's locomotive practice, which is perhaps surprising when it is remembered that no less than 16 different classes of 4-6-0 saw service in LNER livery.

In LNER 4-6-0s at Work Geoffrey Hughes traces the development of this interesting family of locomotives from the early designs inherited from the North Eastern, Great Central and Great Eastern Railways at the Grouping, to the popular and successful Thompson 'B1s' which saw most of their service aver Nationalisation. Illustrated with more than 170 photographs, the majority of which have not been published before. LNER 4-6-0s at Work is an authoritative and fining tribute to a group of locomotives which together form a fascinating cross-section of British examples of the type.
