Southern Branch Lines

Regular price £8.00 Unit price per

At one time country railway stations were as much a part of the rural scene as cricket on the village green, the annual church fete and people working in the fields at harvest time. Communities depended on their local branch line for passenger transport and, in addition, most stations were provided with fair-sized goods yards which handled large consignments of timber, livestock and farm produce. The introduction of motor transport in the 1920s started a long decline in the fortunes of rural railway services, a process that continued unabated through to the 1960s, largely as a result of the inexorable rise in private motoring. Using top quality colour images this album vividly brings to life some of the beautiful country lines that were still to be found in the south of England during the closing years of the branch line age.
