The London Midland Region - successor to the LMS - perpetuated much of the atmosphere of the Big Four company. In Scotland, the LMS interests were gathered up in the Scottish Region. Both Regions retained the spirit of the LMS at least as long as steam was at work.

But from the work of the LMS in developing diesel and electric traction came an important element in the modernisation of BR motive power post-1955.

Michael Baker, whose previous book in the series detailed so graphically the difference between the new and old on the Southern, has attempted to review the changing pattern on former LMS lines in the post-Nationalisation period, warts and all, atmosphere and all. It is a book that will bring back memories for all those that have lived near, worked or simply travelled over what was one of the largest private corporations of its time, and which remained and does so today, an important segment in BR's operations.
