The Bluebell Railway past and present - the ideal 'time travel' companion for the holidaymaker and enthusiast!

It would be difficult to find a line with a more interesting history than that from East Grinstead to Lewes. It boasted through trains from London and was double track for half its length, yet was in reality only a railway backwater; it was operated exclusively by steam locomotives throughout its existence; and it was closed, re-opened and closed again by British Railways, then opened again as the Bluebell Railway, Britain's first standard gauge preserved line, now celebrating almost four decades of success and looking ahead to further exciting developments in the new century.

'Past and Present' regular Terry Gough takes us on a journey along the whole route from East Grinstead to Lewes, including the Horsted Keynes-Haywards Heath branch, which the Bluebell has long-term plans to acquire and re-open. The photographs, supported by tickets and other items of ephemera, cover the two BR periods, as well as early days of preservation and the present-day scene, enabling in some places a series of four views!
