The Furness Railway was an important local railway, its extent ultimately reaching some 117 miles, consisting of the main line from Carnforth through Barrow to Whitehaven, with branches to Windermere (Lakeside) and Coniston. A line with a character all its own, combining superb lakeland and coastal scenery with the industrial regions of Cumberland, it is fondly remembered both locally and further afield.

Happily for later generations, many of the varied aspects of the company's activities were recorded by the Sankey family's photographic business from the early 1900s onwards. The main lines and branches, the locomotives and rolling-stock, the lake and cross-bay steamers and ferries, tours and excursions, stations, signal boxes, road vehicles, Royal visitors, mishaps - all are covered by this remarkable archive. Using over 175 superb photographs from the collection, supported by detailed captions, selected station layout plans, tickets, posters and other ephemera, K. J. Norman paints a vivid portrait of one of Britain's most distinctive and individual railway companies.
