including the Gooles & Marshland Light Railway and the Isle of Axholme Light Railway

1994 edition covering the the line that served a sparsely populated area running from just south of Goole to Haxey on the Doncaster-Lincoln route, via Reedness and Epworth, with branches to Fockerby and Hartfield Moor.

The Axholme Joint Railway (the AJR) resulted from the amalgamation of the two light railways, The Goole and Marshland Light Railway and The Isle of Axholme Lighi Railway, authorised for construction in 1898 and 1899 respectively. They were short-lived as the North Eastern and Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway purchased them under the NER Act of 1902, naming the new railway, The Isle of Axholme Joint Railway. However the 'Isle of was soon dropped and the line was to its demise, affectionally known as THE AXHOLME JOINT RAILWAY Although called 'light railways', the AJR system incorporated many substantial engineering works within its 27 3/4 miles of single track which had been laid with rails strong enough to handle normal locomotives and rolling stock. So here is a history of a fascinating railway running in a very sparsely populated area of England, whose passenger services ceased in 1933, freight in 1965 and from which the last remaining track was lifted in 1972.
