A companion to 'Railways Through Summer Wine Country', this book deals with the history of the railways of the West Riding and the network that surrounded Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford and Huddersfield.

Although built on coal and designed principally for the movements of goods and minerals in very large quantities, the West Riding operated a very tightly knit service of passenger trains which ranged from London express to Kings Cross, St Pancras and Euston to smoke-blackened locals which connected Leeds and Bradford. On the East-West axis, expresses from Newcastle to Liverpool rubbed shoulders with a variety of cross-country stopping trains via both Huddersfield and Sowerby Bridge.

Whilst most operating energies were devoted to coal and goods traffic, modernisation of the passenger services was not neglected and the area was only the second in the country to introduced the diesel multiple unit when diesel services were inaugurated between Leeds and Bradford in 1955.

The book looks at these and many other aspects of the passenger services in details and follows the thread of development from the time of the grouping to the present day.
