The Elham Valley Line

Regular price £14.00 Unit price per

Completed in 1889. the Elham Valley line pursued a meandering course from Folkestone to Canterbury through some of Kent's most glorious country-side. Constructed primarily as a bastion against the rival London, Chatham & Dover Railway, it soon proved a useful link in the South Eastern Railway's network. For fifty years this quiet branch faithfully served the valley communities until this placid rural existence was shattered by the outbreak of the Second World War. During those dark days the line played a unique and useful role in Britain's defence. War-torn and dilapidated. a half-hearted attempt at re-opening failed, and complete closure came in 1947 when it slipped away, virtually unnoticed. into obscurity. This book, representing more than twenty years painstaking research by the author, provides a truly rare and fascinating glimpse not only of a lost age but of Kent's most neglected branch line.
