Rail Centres: Sheffield

Regular price £6.00 Unit price per

The beginning of Sheffield's history as a rail centre is perhaps surprisingly marked by the city's disillusionment with the first rail scheme for the area proposed by the renowned engineer George Stephenson. It was an inauspicious start, and this and geographical reasons meant that it was not until the 1840s and the second Railway Mania that the city gained a locomotive-powered railway system. However, the area had grown to fame as a steelmaking and cutlery centre, and continuing pressure from citizens and industrialists, led by a few determined entrepreneurs, provoked the development of what was to become one of the major nodal points in Britain's railway network.

Stephen R. Batty's addition to the Rail Centres series is a comprehensive account covering the in-fighting of the local railway politics, engineering hazards, service reorganisation and many other facets of the city's railway heritage. Over 200 photographs and maps have been collected together and so enthusiasts and all connected with the city should be delighted to read this book which captures the atmosphere of the railway history of Sheffield so well.
