Born in New Zealand, Oliver Bulleid began his locomotive engineering career in Britain at the Doncaster works of the Great Northern Railway in 1901. With the formation of the London & North Eastern Railway in 1923. Bulleid became personal assistant to the LNER's celebrated Chief Mechanical Engineer, Nigel Gresley, and was closely involved in Gresley's great achievements between the wars. The high point of his career, however, came in 1937, when he joined the Southern Railway to become its Chief Mechanical Engineer.

Bulleid was a born inventor with an insatiable appetite for trying out his ideas in practice. His Pacific classes for the Southern Railway were adventurous designs packed with innovation. Unfortunately. Bulleid's determination to extract greater efficiency from the traditional steam locomotive came late in time. Nationalisation of Britain's railways and then the onset of dieselisation persuaded him to finish his working career in Ireland, where his inventive genius still found some scope until dieselisation took over there also.

This pictorial history of Bulleid's some-times brilliant, often controversial locomotives is in series with Brian Haresnape's other popular studies of famous railway locomotive engineers and their designs; including such figures as Churchward, Gresley. Stanier and Maunsell. A fascinating collection of photographs illustrates both the work of the locomotives and the many detail changes made to their appearance during their lifetimes, including in the case of the Southern Pacifics the rebuilding which many underwent after Nationalisation. Also featured are the shunting and main line diesel and electric locomotives built under Bulleid's supervision both on the Southern Railway and on CIE in Ireland. This new edition has been partly re-illustrated with new photographs and includes an additional section covering Bulleid locomotives in preservation.
