Great Western Steam at Swindon Works

Regular price £5.00 Unit price per

At one time or another, virtually every locomotive class of the old Great Western appeared at Swindon Works, either for overhaul or, in late years, for scrapping. The whole range of the locomotives of Dean, Churchward, Collett and Hawksworth plus those of the small lines absorbed by the G W R such as the Cardiff Railway, Burry Port & Gwendraeth Valley, Midland & South Western Junction, Cambrian, Rhymney and Taff Vale, as well as a number of BR Standard types, could be seen on visits to the Works. Swindon was always interesting and a place where one began finally to expect the unexpected; a Bulleid Pacific or Duke of Gloucester for work on the Test Plant; a crash-damaged Class 9F in for repair; withdrawn City of Truro being overhauled for further service; or a Vale of Rheidol locomotive on special narrow track amid the mighty 'Kings' and 'Castles'. This volume includes scenes in most parts of the Works such as the Erecting Shop, Cutting Up Shop, the Works Yard and the Triangle, plus one or two in the running shed itself, portraying steam at the very heart of the old Great Western.
