Sussex was once rich in rural railways. Before it was merged into the Southern Railway group in 1923, the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway dominated the county. Its delightful locomotives and attractive station-buildings made Sussex a railway paradise. Busy trains, filled with people, once push-ed their way across the countryside, linking remote villages and towns. Some of these country lines live on, but most of them did not survive rationalisation and the motor car. Today only an overgrown track may testify to their once thriving life. In Sussex Railways Remembered Leslie Oppitz explains the history of these lost lines, the reasons for their construction and for their closure. Modern photographs accompany those taken when these railways were open and bustling. The majority are published here for the first time in book form. His excellently written and researched book will be enjoyed both as railway history and as a means by which the reader can explore for himself these sections, now footpaths, that have survived from the heyday of the railway age.
