British Railways Standard Steam Locomotives (No Dust Jacket)

Regular price £9.00 Unit price per

In telling the inside story of the British Railways Standard Locomotives, E. S. Cox opens with a discussion of the pros and cons of locomotive standardisation as such and refers a number of previous exercises in this field. He then describes the inception, development and design of the B.R. engines with which he was so closely connected as Executive Officer for Design on the former Railway Executive, and follows the whole lives of these locomotives through construction, testing and running performance on the line, into such less frequented aspects as maintenance, teething troubles, and costs. In dealing with these controversial machines, the author sheds further light on the last days of steam, and makes many interesting comparisons with the later regional types with which the BR engines had to compete. The book ends with some original thoughts on what trend design might have followed had nationalisation never taken place, or had the triumph of the diesel been delayed for an-other decade or more.
