British Trolleybus Systems

With signs of a revival of interest in the trolleybus as an efficient mode of urban transit, it is opportune to look back at the part formerly played by the trolley vehicle in Britain's cities and towns. The first public services started as early as 1911, and during the 1920s and 1930s the trolleybus developed into a silent and smooth-running vehicle, popular with passengers and operators alike. From the 1950s its decline and eventual demise reflected changing conditions, and the last system closed in 1972. Now in the different environment of the late 1980s, its merits are being re-evaluated, and test runs of a new-age trolleybus started in 1985.

Based on a series of articles which originally appeared in Buses, together with much additional material, this book presents concise details of all the systems which-operated in Britain between 1911 and 1972. An outline history of the trolleybus in Britain and a reminder of 'How it works' preface the main part of the book, a description of each of almost 50 undertakings, including a summary of their history, routes and vehicles, with especial emphasis on the distinctive characteristics of each system. Illustrated with over 160 photographs and maps, British Trolleybus Systems will be welcomed not only as a convenient and comprehensive work of reference, but also as a tribute to a long-undervalued form of transport which is now due for re-assessment.
