"Chasing the Flying Snail", an earlier volume in the "Irish Railway Photographers" series, looked at the operations of CIE, the state-owned Irish railway company, in 1953 and 1957. We now move on, by just a few years, as Jack Patience looks at CIE in the period 1958-62. In the years after 1958, CIE was in an interesting era of transition. The southern half of the GNR(I) had just become part of CIE and the Irish North routes still had goods traffic. On CIE proper, steam and newer diesel trains were working uneasily side by side and the rolling stock was a similar mix of ancient and modern. All of this is illustrated in Jack's photographs as he takes us on visits to, amongst others, Broadstone, Westland Row, Wexford, Cork City and West Cork, the MGWR and GNR(I) lines to Navan, Dundalk and the Irish North. We also pay a call on the Cavan and Leitrim section.
