`In choosing the Great Northern "Atlantics for the second volume in this series of "Classic Locomotives", I do not think there will be many who would, in general terms, dispute the place that these engines occupy in the history of British locomotive development.' With these words O.S. Nock introduces his latest book, which deals in depth with Henry Ivatt's classic design. The small-boilered engine number 990 was not only the first tender locomotive of the 'Atlantic' type to be seen in Great Britain, but also the first ten-wheeled locomotive to be built in this country for express passenger work, and aroused a great deal of interest in the press when it appeared in 1898. This was developed into the massive-looking 251 in 1902 and ultimately through several stages into one of the most remarkable engine classes that have ever run the rails in this country.

This second volume in PSL's 'Classic Locomotives' series examines in fascinating detail the inception, design, development and service record of the Great Northern 'Atlantic' class 4-4-2s. Including recorded running achievements, with tables which demonstrate the outstanding performance of these locomotives, and illustrated with many fine contemporary photographs, this book will delight all who appreciate fine engineering as well as those who look back with nostalgia on the vanished age of steam.
