Express Steam Locomotive Development in Great Britain and France

Regular price £6.00 Unit price per

Locomotives produced specially for use on express passenger trains have always been in the forefront of development as, being so much in the public eye, both appearance and performance are of prime importance.

Long before the days of the Airbus and Concorde, co-operation and exchange of ideas took place between British and French steam locomotive engineers. Per-haps the most obvious and best known example of this was in 1903 when the Great Western Railway erected a locomotive supplied in kit form from France, becoming their No. 102 La France.

Later, Gresley and Bulleid were to make visits to France where the ideas of Chape-lon were to have a profound influence on their subsequent designs.

The author takes the story from the days of Petiet and du Bousquet, Sturrock and Stirling, Churchward and de Glehn, through to the end of steam locomotive development with Riddles in the United Kingdom and the mighty Mountains of France.
