There was no railway quite like the Great Western. Its sturdy green engines with gleaming copper and brass-work and the chocolate and cream coaches are universally remembered with affection. It was the railway least affected by the 1923 Grouping, and even ten years after Nationalisation there was little change in the Great Western scene. Now, however, diesel traction has taken over and the steam loco-motive is extinct on W.R. Hence it is a fitting time to portray something of the last 40 years of steam on the G.W.R. and its successor. This is a pictorial record of steam engines and trains in their environment, ranging from the mighty "Kings" and "Castles" to the once ubiquitous pannier tanks, not overlooking some of those absorbed from companies in Wales and else-where. The illustrations form a worthy tribute to the memory of Great Western steam.
