Historical Steam Locomotives

Regular price £6.00 Unit price per

The full history of the steam loco-motive in Great Britain is long and com-plicated, from the early experiments of Trevithick to the great "Pacific" engines of to-day. It can be studied in all its ramifications and side-issues, in books, in technical treatises, and in the transactions of the learned institutions. But history whether of men or machines cannot be more vividly portrayed than by the living image, and in this book Mr. Nock has re-told the outline of British locomotive history down to the time of grouping around the famous types of which examples are still preserved and can be seen in all their old glory.

He takes us to the engines displayed in the York Railway Museum, in Crewe and Derby works, and elsewhere, and weaves the fascinating story of development round each of them in turn. Together, ranging from the Hetton Colliery engine, via the Furness Coppernob, and the little North Western "flyer" Hardwicke, to the Great Western Lode Star, they form an epitome of locomotive practice in Great Britain in its most colourful days.
