LMS Coaches - An Illustrated History

Regular price £15.00 Unit price per

David Jenkinson and Bob Essery present an illustrated history of LMS coaches over the years 1923-1957.

The LMS railway operated the largest fleet of passenger rated railway vehicles in Britain and, although it inherited many fine coaches from its constituents in 1923, it quickly embarked on a massive standardisation and replacement programme fully comparable with its similar activities in the locomotive building field. To the ordinary traveller, the coach replacement programme was probably the more significant since, by the late 1930s, it led to the LMS having the finest general service carriages of any British company, exceeded in quality only by the limited number of its own and other companies' specially built prestige vehicles. It is the story of this massive coach re-equipment which is contained in these pages, including, of course, the specialised vehicles as well.

Standardisation does not mean uniformity and a perusal of the illustrative content of this book will reveal the huge variety of activities which characterised LMS passenger train operation. Compared with the first edition published in the late 1960s and long out of print—this new book has been updated and provided with a much more lavish selection of photographs, drawings and colour samples than its predecessor. Moreover, the pictures and drawings have been reproduced to a much enlarged scale, with consequent improvement in their quality.

Railway historians, modellers and enthusiasts alike are sure to welcome this reappearance, in revised and enlarged form, of the standard work on LMS passenger vehicles.
