Regular price £16.00 Unit price per

Volume 5 of this series examines those engine sheds inherited from the Caledonian Railway. In construction, emphasis of style and operating practice, Scotland per se differed from England; this volume pursues these themes and attempts to explain and account for them, and to place them in their LMS context.

The Caledonian grew in a series of accretionary bounds and leaps to a position of 'dual pre-eminence' with its bitter rival, the North British. The two divided the spoils of coal and steel, the basis of wealth and power, and by 1923 the Caledonian would rank with any of the great English companies. It brought to the LMS one of the greatest industrial engines of Britain, Glasgow and the Clyde, and much of the Lowland Coalfield business. With some exceptions, the engine sheds were excellently constructed, with little of the dereliction that was to haunt sheds of LNWR and L & Y origin, in the 1930s.

Big straight sheds, sturdily built with lofty roofing, were characteristic of the Caledonian, these features rendered unnecessary the wholesale rebuilding seen in England and the sheds remained much in their original condition.
