The association of GWR locomotive names with royalty and aristocratic titles was so commonplace that "Loco's of 'The Royal Road' " was a most appropriate title for a book on GWR engines. The locomotives themselves had a majestic air about them, with their elegant livery, tasteful amount of polished brass and copper, and curved brass nameplate emblazoned over the centre driving wheel spasher. "Loco's of 'The Royal Road' " is the seventh and last title in the popular series of facsimile reprints of famous books for railway enthusiasts, formerly published by the Great Western Railway in their "Boys of All Ages" series. This highly readable book was originally published in 1936, a time when GWR steam locomotive development was all but complete. Two more notable classes had still to appear, the "Manors" in 1938 and the "Counties" in 1945, but they only carried on the GWR tradition with little or no deviation from the pattern set earlier. Thus this book can be regarded as a concise history of GWR locomotive development and a fair summary of their design, construction and standard features.

W. G. Chapman, the author of the series, wrote in an easy style, readily understood by the younger reader, yet capable of being appreciated by experts more knowledgeable and maturer in years. The GWR, with its flair for publicity, never found it difficult to reach an appreciative audience. The same is still true today.

Although the books in this attractive series were published in their thousands in the 1920s and 1930s, original examples are not easy to find today. These facsimile reprints will be eagerly sought by many railway enthusiasts as nostalgic reminders of days now past.
