London Midland Main Line Cameraman

Regular price £6.00 Unit price per

The photographs in this book are about one subject, the London Midland Region (and its fore- runner, the London Midland and Scottish Railway). They were all taken by the one cameraman, the author, and skilfully printed and arranged by Michael Esau.

Philip Conolly developed a remarkable feel for the London Midland and this comes through in his photographs. They say more about the railway and its main line operation than could ever be expressed in words. First, therefore, glance through the book as a whole and familiarise yourself with settings which themselves were typical - Euston, St Pancras, Tebay, Shap, Garsdale, Carlisle.

Notice in passing the way in which the author has captured the photogenic effect of cross-wind, rain and sunlight on the steam locomotives and their surroundings. Sense the all-pervading steam, smoke and grime.

Then go through with more care and study each picture individually, enjoying the author's eye for characteristic London Midland scenes, double-heading of trains, the stations, the signal boxes, the lineside and, a special feature of this book, a glimpse into the life of the railwaymen themselves.

The illustrations are so evocative that one turns back to them again and again for an enjoyment which is renewed and enhanced each time.
