The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway spread itself for some 600 miles across the two counties of the Red and White Rose. Much of this way it ran through industrial areas where the typical backdrop was angular cotton mills, stone quarries and colliery spoilheaps, although in the Pennines hill scenery alternates with industrial towns. The general scene was one of frequent trains, long coal trains, even longer returning empties, a host of parcels trains in the evening, well-used goods loops and busy junctions.
