London Steam in the 1930s

The 1930s was an exciting decade for rail travellers, the heyday of British steam. It was the decade of Stanier's Pacifics, of the 'Black Fives' and the powerful 'Jubilees'; of the 'Bristolian' and the 'Cheltenham Flyer'; of dazzling 'Schools' 4-4-0 performances on the 'Bournemouth Limited'. Contrasting with this power and beauty and the prestige of the passenger expresses were the workings of older locomotives, like the 'Princes', 'Jintys' and 'Crabs', on less glamorous but no less important services.

E. R. Wethersett was one of the most expert photographers of that exciting decade, and many of his photographs have since become oft-repeated classics. While many of these demanded inclusion in this book, the editor, G. Freeman Allen - himself a noted and prolific railway writer — has selected, as far as possible, the least familiar pictures from the Wethersett collection to represent the period.

With over 200 illustrations, all informatively and authoritatively captioned, London Steam in the 1930s presents a superb portrait of the London railway scene as it changed from year to year of the 1930s.
