London's Trams: Then and Now

In July 1952, London bade farewell to its last trams. Although the final abandonments, codenamed 'Operation Tram- away', were witnessed by huge crowds, who mourned the passing of the familiar tramcar, others - most notably London Transport - welcomed the end as opening the way to less congested roads. In the 1990s this optimism seems to have been sadly misplaced.

Over the past 40 years the streets of Lon- don have seen dramatic changes. Apart from the disappearance of the tramcar, to be replaced by the bus, many familiar buildings and sights have been demolished, whilst the roads have become increasingly choked by the record numbers of private motor cars.

In London's Trams: Then & Now Julian Thompson provides an evocative reminder to the street scenes of 40 years ago, contrasting them with photographs taken over the past few years to illustrate the remarkable changes in the Metropolis since the immediate postwar years. In recalling the long-lost era of the tram- car the author provides a fascinating snapshot of the years between 1945 and 1952, with a narrative recalling the operation of the trams - remember the long-gone institution of the change-pit? and many of the long-forgotten incidents that marked the final years of the London tramcar.

With its remarkable collection of photographs London's Trams: Then & Now will be of interest to both transport enthusiasts and those who know and love London.
