Second edition (1986 Reprint)

James Boyd is a household name where narrow gauge railways are concerned, and as he often complains (though they are not his main interest in this subject) he is expected to write about them!

The original title (here re-printed from the 1970 Second Revised Edition) first appeared in 1952, and was prepared in the days when the popularity of railway books was based largely on what steam engine appeared at the head of the train. Back- ground, personalities, purpose, route, rolling stock and commercial viability were matters which in those days would prove sudden death to any publisher allowing his authors to give much space to them. James Boyd challenged all that, preferring to cover each railway system as an entity.

Narrow Gauge Railways in Mid-Wales, still basically the book it was in 1952, has always commanded a wide readership; it falls some way between the old style of railway history, and the modern form created by the author in his present works. Covering the period 1850- 1970 (and therefore not a part of Wales where the earliest narrow gauge lines were built), it describes the most modern of them, some quite different in purpose from those in north-west Wales.
