Narrow Gauge Story

The early spread of standard gauge metals throughout the British Isles seriously curtailed the prospects and opportunities for narrow gauge railways in Britain. There were thus no extensive secondary light railway systems providing services over hundreds of route miles, but within what were, at first sight, strictly limited confines, the narrow gauge blossomed, and was to prove itself far more versatile than its larger, but more cumbersome neighbours. By the early years of this century, narrow gauge railways climbed mountains, ran underground, provided much-needed transport in the congested streets of our towns and cities, and were in widespread industrial and contracting use. Diversity was the rule, rather than the exception, and even on one system, standardisation was rare.

Narrow Gauge books have tended to portray a single railway or type of railway, but in Narrow Gauge Story, the development of these individualistic lines is recorded in their many guises, steam, electric, pleasure. and industrial. This fascinating story is unfolded in a profusely illustrated historical survey supported by photographic sections portraying six diverse steam lines, four highly individual electric systems, three pleasure railways and an industrial gallery which embraces quarries, a cathedral and a brewery. In all, there are in excess of 200 views together with numerous plans, notices and documents, the vast majority of which have never previously appeared in print
