Bert Stewart, like many lads, dreamed of being an engine driver, but in his case he actually became one! He tells of his addiction for the footplate life from schoolboy days in the twenties through to the advent of todays diesels and electrics. His love for steam is apparent as he tells of his experiences through the grades at first Lostock Hall shed Preston, then Crewe South depot. It was at Crewe that he became a top link driver with route knowledge stretching from Euston in the south to Perth in the north - quite an achievement.

In his later days at Crewe, Bert became involved with the A4 Locomotive Preservation Society, owners of 4498 'Sir Nigel Gresley', and he relates several runs over Shap and Ais Gill with 4498 in his care. 'On the Right Lines' captures the essence of an era now past—an era of colourful characters, hard work, coal, steam and dirt . . . and achievement. Bert Stewart's story will bring it all back for you.
