2nd Edition

For a thousand years Bristol has been the centre of a thriving region. Well-placed for the export and import trade, and blessed with vigorous mercantile interests, the city developed over the years to become the second city in the kingdom.

The growth of railways in the area was • determined primarily by its economic significance. Coal in Bristol's hinterland led to the construction of a line that was initially horse-worked but soon steam-operated. Within a few years routes began to radiate from the city and soon the main passenger station - Temple Meads - had to be enlarged.

Today a major junction between London and the southwest, the southwest and north, and South Wales and the South Coast, Bristol is still of great significance to the railway network.

This is a new edition of the first volume to appear in the 'Rail Centres' series. The text has been brought completely up-to-date and the vast majority of illustrations did not appear in the first edition.
