Railway Accidents of Great Britain and Europe: Their Causes and Consequences

Regular price £8.00 Unit price per

Simply because railways are recognised as being among the safest forms of trans- port, railway accidents always make a deep impression on the public mind, and are invariably reported in the daily and periodical press. They are also the subjects of searching inquiries, which have not infrequently led to important improvements in operating technique. It is all the more surprising, then, that the permanent literature on the subject is so sparse.

In this book, for the first time, descriptions of a number of accidents in all the principal countries of western Europe are collected and arranged according to their causes. Most of them have occurred during the present century, but a few earlier ones have been included because of their great technical importance. The authors have rigidly eschewed sensationalism, and have kept their descriptions as factual and objective as possible, but as a glance at these pages will show, the subject is sufficiently dramatic to require no additional dressing-up.

Though the book is aimed primarily at the interested layman, it also contains much to interest professional railwaymen. As a guide to the operational problems common to all railways, and as a survey of the background to safety measures, it will be a valuable work of reference.
