Much of our detailed knowledge of early industrial development in Great Britain is derived from the writings of visitors from overseas who came for the purpose of gaining information about our pioneer achievements. The authors of the report which forms the subject of the present translation were Prussian mining engineers who came to England specifically to study the railways here; they made their enquiries with typical Teutonic thoroughness, even to the extent of pacing the lengths of railway inclines to satisfy themselves as to the precision of the information supplied by their informants.

The major portion of their report remained unexplored until it was translated by the late E. A. Forward in 1942. On his death in 1959 his manuscript was deposited with the Newcomen Society for the Study of the History of Engineering and Technology, and some years later Charles E. Lee, in collaboration with K. R. Gilbert, undertook to edit it as an Extra Publication. In the words of the two authors, 'It would be difficult to find a subject which, in recent years, has attracted so much general interest as that provided by the extensive schemes which have been, and are still being, prepared daily in England, for the improvement of inland communications.' Their report, illustrated by their own drawings, is an invaluable source of information on a particularly interesting period.
