The post-war Southern was an exciting line for the steam enthusiast. In the mid-1930s the Southern Railway had been setting the pace in electrification and consequently in steam development it had been very much the Cinderella of the Big Four. This left a post-war heritage of a great variety of distinctive pre- Grouping classes, alongside which O. V. S. Bulleid introduced his very advanced 'Mer- chant Navy' and 'West Country/Battle of Britain' Pacific classes. The system was a feast for the camera's eye, especially as external cleanliness of the locomotives was usually of high standard.

S. C. Nash was a prolific and expert recorder of the Southern scene during these twenty years. This album is a vivid recollection of that period, covering both the normal and the exceptional working and a wide-ranging variety of locomotive types, mainlines and branches.
